Residents in Ugenya Sub-county took matters into their own hands after the alleged murder of 32-year-old Chris Olunga at a liquor joint in the Sihayi trading center.
The incident led to a public outcry, resulting in the storming of the Sihayi police post and the subsequent torching of a house believed to belong to the suspect.
The Assistant Chief of the Ligala sub-location, Chrispine Onyango, revealed that Olunga was stabbed to death during a disagreement with a friend at the liquor joint.
The discovery of Olunga’s body near the establishment raised questions when it was swiftly moved to a private mortuary in Sega town without informing the family, intensifying the public’s frustration.
In response, angered residents demanded answers, leading to the storming of the police station.
Subsequently, they targeted the suspected killer’s home, setting it ablaze, before returning to the trading center to torch part of the liquor joint.
Despite the intense community reaction, Onyango clarified that the suspect was not present at his house during the incident, as he had surrendered himself to the police at the Sihayi police post and had already been taken into custody at Ukwala Police station.
Investigations are underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding Chris Olunga’s tragic death.
