Google is working on a new way to help you protect your accounts and devices, and it’s all about saying goodbye to those pesky passwords.
Instead, they want you to use what they call “passkeys” to unlock your stuff. Passkeys can be as simple as a fingerprint scan, a face recognition, or a PIN number.
The good news is that you won’t have to remember a long and complicated password anymore.
Passkeys are not only more secure, but they’re also quicker to use.
Google introduced this idea in May, and now they’re encouraging people to use passkeys instead of passwords in a recent blog post.
“We’ll continue encouraging the industry to make the pivot to passkeys — making passwords a rarity, and eventually obsolete,” Google wrote.
But don’t worry if you like your old passwords. Google is still going to support them.
You can choose not to use passkeys by turning off the “skip password when possible” option in your account settings.
Right now, you can use passkeys for apps like YouTube, Search, Maps, Uber, and eBay, and soon even WhatsApp will get this feature.
A group called the FIDO Alliance, which includes many tech companies, helped create the standards for passkey.
Big players like Microsoft, Apple, and Google have been working together to make passkeys a reality.
Apple already introduced passkeys in iOS 16, and you can use them in apps like Apple Wallet.
Google started using passkeys for Chrome and Android devices in October 2022.
So, it looks like we might soon be saying farewell to our old passwords and welcoming the era of passkeys for a more convenient and secure way to protect our accounts and devices.
