In a recent operation, police uncovered a hidden stash of counterfeit liquor and a significant amount of ethanol in a rented house in Ngurubani town, Mwea-East Sub-county, Kirinyaga County.
Acting on a tip from a concerned citizen, officers from Wang’uru police station conducted the operation.
According to Kirinyaga police commander Rebuben Muli, they made several crucial discoveries during the raid.
They seized 240 cartons of suspected fake alcohol along with Kenya Revenue Stamps (KRA) stamps.
In addition to this, they found 260 liters of ethanol stored in 13 jerricans, two pressing machines, a roll of KRA stickers, 5,956 bottles, and three bags filled with assorted bottles.
Muli emphasized the importance of addressing the issue of people using residential homes for illegal liquor operations.
He explained that these activities often go unnoticed because they occur within residential areas.
“This business is taking place in a residential area.
You cannot suspect, you cannot know an ordinary person, a police officer on patrol will not know and that is the reason I said we acted on our informer,” said Muli.
The police commander also mentioned that the counterfeit alcohol was being repackaged in reused bottles from well-known brands and then resold.
He made it clear that this crackdown on fake alcohol would not spare anyone involved in these illegal activities.
“We are looking for the suspect who is at large, if someone wants to do this business, there are correct procedures, we will sustain a crackdown against rogue traders until we have them out of Kirinyaga,” noted Muli.
“So far we are almost at 98 percent in eradicating the vice and I’m sure before long we will be at 100 percent,” he added.
The owner of the house expressed her surprise, saying she knew the tenant as a young man who had been raised in a Christian environment.
She had no idea he was involved in such activities.
“I know the young man who had been brought up in a Christian way.
Little did I know he involved himself in this business,” she said.
All the confiscated fake liquor and related items were transported to Wanguru police station in two Landcruisers.
