Additional suspects have been apprehended as part of an extensive manhunt targeting individuals involved in the looting and arson incidents at Chieni supermarkets across Nyeri and Nanyuki counties during nationwide protests on June 25.
According to the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the latest arrests were made on Thursday in Nanyuki, where four suspects were located at various hideouts and found in possession of stolen merchandise.
Chris Wamuhu, 24 years old, was apprehended at a rented residence where authorities recovered a Hisense fridge, Uken water dispenser, coffee cups, teaspoons, hotpot dishes, and luminarc plates, among other items.
The DCI noted that Wamuhu’s identification from circulated footage played a pivotal role in his arrest, linking him directly to the thefts from the supermarket.
In a separate operation, Moses Gachwe, 30, was found in possession of 22 pairs of khaki trousers, 9 T-shirts, 24 pairs of undergarments (boxers), and sandals at another location in Nanyuki.
“Outside the town’s Asian Quarters, Charles Kaariri Mumbi, aged 35, was apprehended with a junior ride bike, while John Ndirangu Ndirirtu, 41, was found in possession of six vacuum flasks, a shopping trolley, an LG fridge, and numerous luminarc plates and cups,” the DCI reported.
These individuals will be joining several others already in police custody as law enforcement intensifies efforts to crack down on those responsible for the violent incidents.
The ongoing investigation has also resulted in the recovery of various stolen goods across both Nyeri and Laikipia counties, reinforcing the commitment of local police to bring all culprits to justice.
The DCI’s office shared images of the recovered items, underscoring progress in the case.
Efforts to restore calm and ensure accountability continue unabated, with authorities urging the public to assist in identifying any additional suspects linked to the incidents.
The DCI emphasized that anyone with relevant information should come forward to aid in the swift resolution of the case.
As the investigation progresses, law enforcement agencies remain vigilant, pledging to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice and restoration of order in the affected communities.
