Police have received credible information about organized criminal groups planning to disrupt peaceful demonstrations scheduled for Tuesday.
Acting Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has cautioned protesters to remain cautious and watchful for potential threats to their safety during the demonstrations.
“We have received credible intelligence this morning indicating that certain organized criminal groups intend to infiltrate, disrupt, and undermine the peaceful nature of the demonstrations, which could endanger the safety of demonstrators,” stated the police chief in a released statement.
“As you participate in the demonstrations, we urge you to maintain peace and be vigilant. Please cooperate and coordinate with the police to ensure your safety and our collective security as Kenyans during this event,” he continued.
Kanja assured that the police would uphold the rule of law, protect citizens, maintain order, and safeguard everyone’s constitutional rights.
The nationwide protests, initially sparked by opposition to the Finance Bill 2024, have evolved into widespread calls for President William Ruto‘s resignation.
Despite Ruto withdrawing the controversial bill, dissolving his Cabinet, and promising austerity measures, many Kenyans continue to demand his resignation, chanting “Ruto must go” on social media and in protests.
Previous demonstrations resulted in the deaths of over 40 protesters, prompting criticism of the police for using excessive force, making arbitrary arrests, and allegedly abducting youths.
Japhet Koome resigned as Inspector General of Police on Friday following severe criticism of police conduct during the protests, including allegations of violence against unarmed demonstrators.
Previous protests also witnessed instances of looting and vandalism, which were largely attributed to hired individuals.
