A wildfire that brokeout on grasslands near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport(JKIA) yesterday evening has been successfully contained,, with authorities confirming that airport operations have not been distrupted.
The fire, which started close to 75 Airport North Road, promped a swift response from emergency services, according to the Kenya Airport Authority (KAA).
Social media vidios showed the flames spreading across grassy area near one of the airport’s runways, with one clip filmed from a landing aircraft showing the blze close to the runway.
Despite the fire, the KAA reassured the public that flight schedules, passenger processing, and cargo handling were unaffected.
“All airport activities, including landings and takeoffs, are continuing without disruption,” the KAA said in a statement.
Fire engines, Police, Kenya,Defence Forces Personnel, and teams from the Nairobi County Fire Department and KAA’s Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Service were swiftly deployed to contain the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The incident occurred just after JKIA received the African Cargo Airport of the Year award at the STAT Times International Awards for Excellence in Air Cargo, recognizing the airport’s vital role in regional trade and logistics.
JKIA General Manager Dr. Rose Koros, along with Cargo Manager Jacob Bwana and Product & Brand Manager Debra Ondaba, accepted the prestigious award, which was hailed as a testament to the airport’s commitment to operational excellence.
