A group of police officers raided the Nairobi home of retired president Uhuru Kenyatta over claims his son Jomo had illegal weapons.
The team of police in three cars some with South Sudanese registration numbers went to the home where the son stays and demanded to see him.
They told the guards they wanted to verify the legality of the guns Jomo has been having.
Jomo is a licensed gun holder.
What drew the attention of Jomo was the fake registration numbers imposed on the cars that went to his house.
This prompted him to call his father who is the former president.
Police at times use such number plates whenever they are in sensitive missions.
A senior officer who did not want to be named confirmed the operation saying they wanted to check on the legality of the guns.
He said they had conducted similar operations on some senior officials in Azimio without elaborating.
Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome did not respond to our calls. But another officer said they had information which they wanted to verify.
“A statement may be issued. Wait,” said the official.
When Uhuru was informed he told the son he was on his way there.
He told Jomo the orders to search the home cannot be verbal and that they needed to serve him with an order.
“When police want to see you they don’t come in foreign registration and have to have a warrant.
They don’t come with verbal orders,” said a Uhuru.
The officers waited for a while and left as Uhuru arrived at the home.
They had apparently accessed the house and searched it.
Uhuru was in his office which is within Karen.
An angry Uhuru said this was part of intimidation that is being sent to him by those in power.
And he said he will not be intimidated and will defend himself and his family.
“If they want me let them come for me. I am here. They should not go for my old mother or children.
I will not be intimidated. I am ready to defend my family,” he said.
“People who have been guarding my mother for 50 years being withdrawn is wrong. Silence is sometimes not right.”
He was referring to the move by the government to withdraw security from the homes of former First Lady Mama Ngina.
The police were withdrawn on Tuesday evening forcing Uhuru to send some of those seconded to him to his mother.
He said the issues that Kenyans are talking about are real and should be addressed.
He denied funding anti-government protests and asked if it is a crime to talk to Raila.
“Let them tell me it is a crime to talk to so and or terrorists or bank robbers.”
He said he handed over power peacefully and wondered why he and his family are being harassed.
“Don’t plan against my mother. Don’t plan against my children. They want to take their weapons.
If they have illegal weapons say,” he said at the entrance.
He said the weapons are legally held and he does not know what the government plans for him and the family.
“They followed the procedures to own the weapons.
How many people have such weapons including foreigners?” An angry Uhuru asked.
“Do you want to go and look for my mother? Do you want my children? Come for me.
I am here.
If you have those claims.
Say. What is the problem?”
He said he is ready to live without government security and that he will defend himself.
He told the Kenya Kwanza they were elected to govern.
“Deal with issues Kenyans are raising.
When I was in power I was dealing with issues.”
He said he has never talked to President William Ruto because he is not interested in doing so.
“I mean you have a tet with someone who is willing to.
Why should I talk to someone who doesn’t want to talk.”
He said whatever truce some parties are pushing for will come at the right time but for now, he will defend his family.
He said he did the best for the country and handed over power to Ruto.
At the Jubilee party, he said he has rejected a coup being orchestrated by the government.
“What I completely rejected was the coup that was planned to take over my party. I will not hand over to some puppet people being supported by this government.”
He told the media to defend the freedoms being eroded.
