Police authorities say the Monday protests over the high cost of living left over 30 officers injured.
More than 10 police vehicles especially in Nairobi were damaged in the clashes that took place in various places.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki commended police conduct during the protests.
“The National Police Service (NPS) has done our Country proud, despite the day-long provocation by unruly protesters. Kenya must end impunity and apply one Constitution and one set of laws for everyone, for enduring peace and stability of our Nation,” he said.
A senior police officer said he lost his pistol magazine in the melee.
Several officers reported they used up to 100 live bullets in the chaos that broke out as police confronted pockets of protesters.
One person was shot and killed in Kisumu while another one was injured in the Kibera area, Nairobi.
Further, there were attempts to loot property, especially in the Embakasi area where police were forced to use live ammunition.
In a report to police headquarters, the Nairobi area command said 13 officers were injured in Tassia, Fedha, and along Outering Road.
Five others were injured along Juja Road as they confronted the protesters who pelted them with stones.
Another group of about ten officers was injured in parts of Kibera and Ngong Road in the drama.
The injured were treated and discharged, police said. One of them had tear gas burns on the stomach.
Police said a group took advantage of the situation to break into a supermarket in Tassia and stole an unknown amount of cash, assorted electronic items, and other supermarket goods.
Another group broke into an alcoholic store and stole assorted alcoholic drinks.
Police say they arrested five suspects in the drama.
Police headquarters said there were pockets of protests in Migori, Kisumu, Kakamega, Kisii, Nyamira, Nakuru, Thika, and Machakos.
Some roads were blocked in Nairobi by police who heightened tension and fear scaring many from venturing into the city center.
Police used teargas canisters to disperse groups that tried to converge in the city.
They had declared the protests unlawful amid protests that police have no authority to permit such processions.
The opposition is protesting against the high cost of living, corruption, and electoral injustices.
