There was a shock in a village when police shot and killed a man armed with a panga who had killed a dog and drank its blood in Rongo, Migori County.
The man also threatened to kill his family in Ndege Oriedo village, Rongo sub-county on July 3 evening.
The family of George Otieno Okoth, 40, said he had turned violent and started threatening them.
He later turned to a family dog, killed it, slit its head, and drank the blood before starting to chew on the head.
His ten children ran away before the deceased brother ran to Kamagambo police station and reported the incident, police said.
He had also tried to burn their house.
Area police boss Peter Okiring’ said the man armed with panga was unruly when the police arrived there and tried to disarm him.
He said police were forced to shoot in the air severally after attempts and those from his family to tell the man to calm down failed.
It was then they opened fire and killed him.
The sharp machete and sharp metal were recovered from the scene, police said.
He said the body was taken to Rosewood Hospital Mortuary as police have launched investigations over the incident.
Police linked the issue to mental stress.
It is not clear if the man had such a history.
