Police in Nairobi’s Kayole area shot and killed a robbery suspect during an incident on Sunday near the Mwengenye area along the Nairobi River.
According to police reports, a patrol team responded to cries for help from a robbery victim and spotted two suspects fleeing towards Rhemu Flats.
The officers pursued the suspects after confirming they had attacked and robbed a female pedestrian.
Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei stated that the suspects ignored orders to surrender, prompting the police to open fire.
One suspect was shot and killed, while the other managed to escape into the darkness.
Upon searching the deceased’s body, authorities recovered a toy pistol, a knife tucked into his waistband, and two mobile phones.
The unidentified male, believed to be around 25 years old, was taken to the City Mortuary, where a postmortem is awaited.
In response to the rise in robberies, police have intensified patrols throughout the city.
Bungei noted that numerous suspects have been apprehended and prosecuted during recent operations, contributing to a decline in crime rates.
In a separate incident, a 50-year-old man was seriously injured during a livestock robbery in Merti, Isiolo County.
Gunmen raided the Dadacha-anan area, firing on herders and stealing 33 cows as they fled towards Samburu.
One herder, identified as Mamo, sustained a gunshot wound to his right thigh and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
This area is currently under multi-agency operations aimed at addressing the ongoing threat of gun violence from bandits, alongside several other regions, including Turkana, Meru, Marsabit, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Samburu.
The frequent attacks have severely hindered development efforts in the region.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki described cattle rustling in Northern Kenya as an organized criminal enterprise that contributes to death, poverty, and displacement.
He emphasized the need to dismantle the infrastructure supporting cattle rustlers, making banditry a costly endeavor while ensuring the recovery of stolen livestock and rewarding those who facilitate these recoveries.
