President William Ruto has voiced his support for the recommendations put forth by the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO), jointly presented by the ruling Kenya Kwanza and opposition Azimio la Umoja coalitions.
Speaking to a gathering at the Priesthood Fellowship in Kahawa West, Roysambu Constituency on Sunday, President Ruto commended the committee’s completion of its task and urged unity in propelling Kenya forward.
Ruto emphasized the need for a substantial reduction in government spending, advocating not just for a 30% but a 50% cut.
He urged leaders to adopt a lifestyle aligned with the country’s means to foster progress.
“All the recommendations are acceptable.
Where they suggested a 50% reduction in government spending, I’ve already taken steps in that direction.
Those proposing a 30% reduction should consider increasing it to 50% for the advancement of Kenya.
Living within our means is crucial,” he added.
President Ruto called on Members of Parliament to promptly discuss and act on the committee’s proposals, emphasizing a shared responsibility for Kenya’s advancement.
“The ball is now in your court, MPs.
Deliberate on the issues and let’s move forward together without animosity and division,” urged Ruto.
Applauding the committee’s four-month effort, President Ruto underscored the practicality of their recommendations.
The committee, in a joint statement on November 25, emphasized the necessity of a 50% cut in travel budgets across government branches and proposed a 30% reduction in Daily Subsistence Allowances for State and Public Officers.
This move, according to the committee, aims to address the soaring cost of living.
Another noteworthy proposal from the committee is the establishment of the offices of the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Official Opposition.
Pending National Assembly approval, this could lead to the appointments of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and opposition leader Raila Odinga to these respective offices.
