President William Ruto has given his assurance to Members of Parliament that the release of the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) to their constituencies will be done before the reopening of schools in January.
This commitment comes in the aftermath of a parliamentary deadlock on Wednesday, during which MPs halted proceedings to demand the timely release of their NG-CDF allocations from the Treasury.
Parliament witnessed a dramatic scene on Tuesday when legislators staged a walkout in protest of the government’s failure to disburse funds earmarked for the NG-CDF.
The Plenary session ended prematurely, accompanied by chants of ‘solidarity forever’ and ‘No CDF, No Parliament!’
Recognizing the delay in fund disbursement, attributed to the nation’s current liquidity challenges, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u had earlier pointed to financial constraints as the underlying cause.
President Ruto, however, underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to prioritize the disbursement of NG-CDF, especially to ensure that students relying on these funds for bursaries do not face any disruptions.
The president made this commitment during the commemoration of the ten-year milestone of the Kikuyu Constituency Education Foundation and the inauguration of the foundation’s Endowment Fund.
The KICE Foundation, established under the patronage of Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwa, aims to support financially disadvantaged and marginalized students in accessing quality education.
President Ruto highlighted the pivotal role played by NG-CDF in assisting underprivileged students, pledging to expedite its allocation to prevent any adverse impact on the beneficiaries.
He reiterated the government’s focus on safeguarding the educational pursuits of deserving students and ensuring equitable access to resources.
