President William Ruto has been acknowledged by Time Magazine, a renowned American publication, as one of the influential figures advocating for climate action globally in 2023.
Described as a “leader in green investment,” President Ruto’s recognition comes on the heels of Kenya hosting the inaugural Africa Climate Summit this year.
The summit successfully secured an impressive $23 billion (Ksh.3.5 trillion) in funding earmarked for climate initiatives across the continent.
In an interview with Time Magazine, President Ruto emphasized the importance of unity in addressing the climate crisis, highlighting it as a worldwide issue that cannot be resolved by dividing nations into “polluters and victims.”
He stressed the potential of Africa to contribute significantly to climate solutions, including affordable renewable energy, green products, and conservation efforts.
President Ruto stated, “Africa can provide affordable renewable energy, green products, and conservation and climate restoration.
But that will only happen if we think of humanity as sharing a joint burden and future, and if we deploy economic activities where they make the most sense to drive human development and counter climate change as quickly, cheaply, and effectively as possible.”
“Africa’s renewable energy potential, young workforce, and natural resources and assets create an inherent ability to provide solutions—cost-competitive green products and services, whilst addressing growing global labor shortages.”
The inclusion of President Ruto in Time Magazine’s climate leaders list closely follows his leadership in a national tree-planting day, an initiative that resulted in the planting of over 150 million trees across the country, as reported by Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura.
