The national government has officially initiated the development of 600 housing units as part of the Talai Ainamoi Affordable Housing Project Phase 1 in Kericho Town.
President Dr. William Ruto, alongside a prominent government delegation, spearheaded the groundbreaking ceremony for the Talai Ainamoi Affordable Housing Project on a 5-acre plot.
He emphasized the project’s significance in addressing slum proliferation and preserving land for agricultural purposes, stating, “The construction of the AHP houses will go a long way in reducing slums in the country and save extra land for food production.”
Acknowledging the ongoing construction of 60,000 housing units nationwide, President Ruto announced plans for the construction of over 100,000 additional units by April 2024.
He highlighted the employment opportunities generated by the project, with 260,000 youth slated for recruitment countrywide, including 10,000 in Kericho alone across various trades such as carpentry, masonry, and engineering.
Quoting Dr. Ruto, “We want to build a total of 5000 housing units under phase 1, in the Talai Majengo area, we are constructing 600 units and in the Chelimo area we will add more units.”
Assuring adherence to constitutional mandates, President Ruto affirmed his administration’s commitment to providing housing solutions for citizens.
He revealed plans for land acquisition to facilitate the expansion of Kericho town, aiming for city status.
Additionally, he announced progress in transforming Kerenga Airstrip into a fully-fledged airport, supported by donations of land from multinational Tea Estates, fostering Kericho’s growth as an agricultural hub.
Furthermore, President Ruto inaugurated the ICT Jitume Digital Hub at Belgut Technical Training Institute, emphasizing its role in creating digital employment opportunities for students and residents alike.
He unveiled plans to establish village digital hubs across every constituency, facilitating online businesses and economic transformation.
The President also launched infrastructure projects, including road upgrades and the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) for modern markets, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to regional development.
The ceremony was attended by Deputy President Rigthi Gachagwa, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, and various Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, and local officials, underscoring the collaborative effort towards Kericho’s socio-economic advancement.
