President William Ruto has tasked the National Youth Service (NYS) with overseeing the new Climate Works Mtaani initiative, which aims to bolster Kenya’s environmental sustainability.
This directive was announced during the 88th pass-out parade in Naivasha, where Ruto highlighted the role of the NYS in managing the program.
The Climate Works Mtaani initiative is set to involve over 280,000 young people who were previously engaged in the Kazi Mtaani Initiative.
This new program will focus on large-scale tree-planting activities, aligning with President Ruto’s 2022 commitment to improve environmental sustainability in Kenya.
As part of his broader environmental agenda, Ruto had launched a five-year plan in 2022 to plant five million trees, reflecting his administration’s dedication to ecological preservation.
The Kazi Mtaani Initiative, introduced by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2021, was recently phased out by Ruto.
The previous program had aimed to offer employment opportunities to youths from informal urban settlements through various public projects.
Serving as a key component of a wider social protection framework.
However, Ruto deemed it outdated and has now shifted focus to the new Climate Works Mtaani initiative.
This transition represents a strategic move towards more sustainable and impactful environmental projects,
Leveraging the energy and involvement of a large youth demographic to address Kenya’s pressing ecological challenges.
By engaging thousands of young people in tree-planting efforts, the Climate Works Mtaani initiative seeks to make a significant contribution to the country’s environmental goals and ensure the effective management of natural resources.
