President William Ruto announced that his administration plans to construct at least 40,000 social housing units to accommodate individuals displaced by recent flooding in Nairobi.
During a visit to Kibra on Monday, where he inspected ongoing affordable housing projects, Ruto stated that the tender for these new units will be issued soon.
The initiative aims to provide housing for those relocated due to flooding.
Ruto highlighted that there are currently over 110,000 affordable housing units under development across the country.
“We are constructing 110,000 homes in various parts of Kenya.
In the second phase here in Nairobi, where we recently evacuated people due to floods, we will soon announce a tender for 40,000 social housing units.
This will provide homes for those who were relocated from riverbanks after the floods.
We had provided them with funds for relocation,” Ruto said.
The floods, which occurred in April and May, resulted in the loss of over 267 lives and displaced more than 56,000 households, affecting approximately 282,000 people.
The disaster also impacted 1,967 schools and 62 health facilities across 11 counties.
In response to the crisis, the government ordered both voluntary and mandatory evacuations and instructed the removal of structures from riparian zones along Nairobi’s rivers and other affected areas.
