A Principal Probation Officer will Tuesday be arraigned before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court over allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe to influence the outcome of a criminal case at Kangema Law Courts.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) said Julius Irungu Njogu will face charges of conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption and receiving a bribe.
According to the Commission, Njogu was initially arrested alongside Senior Principal Magistrate Martin Kinyua Mutegi following investigations into claims that the two solicited and received a Sh150,000 bribe from a litigant in exchange for influencing the outcome of a criminal case.
The suspects were later released on police bond pending the completion of investigations.
EACC said the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) approved its recommendation to charge the suspects, prompting the re-arrest of the probation officer on Monday ahead of his court appearance.
The Commission said the Senior Principal Magistrate, who was also expected to be arraigned, allegedly went into hiding.
It added that after investigators traced him, he reportedly admitted himself to hospital before he could be presented in court.
EACC said it will pursue all necessary legal and procedural measures to ensure the magistrate is brought before court to answer charges of allegedly receiving a bribe in exchange for passing a favourable sentence.
The Commission maintained that the charges against both suspects have been approved by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
