Expressing delight in seeing diverse farmers attending the event, including those in cotton and poultry farming, Odinga stressed the significance of food self-sufficiency.
“Self-sufficiency in food production is primary,” he emphasized, underlining the importance of small-scale agriculture in ensuring food security for a growing population.
Odinga commended the Siaya government’s efforts to support farmers, including initiatives like affordable tractor hire services at two thousand Kenyan shillings per acre, facilitating timely plowing and planting.
He also praised the quality standards implemented by seed companies to ensure farmers have access to high-quality seeds.
Siaya Governor James Orengo echoed Odinga’s sentiments, emphasizing that agriculture and the blue economy are pivotal for Siaya’s economic growth.
Plans were disclosed to install a cotton milling machine in Madiany, Rarieda sub-county, further bolstering the agricultural sector.
Highlighting recent successes, Orengo mentioned the establishment of a rice milling plant in Siriwo, addressing a longstanding challenge for rice farmers in Siaya.
With the plant operational, Siaya rice farmers can now process their rice within the county, saving crucial production costs and boosting local agricultural development.
