Almost a week before schools resume for the second semester, the government now wants owners of private education institutes to reduce school fees.
The Minister of Education, Ezekiel Machogu, criticized the high cost of private schools asking the school owners to reduce fees to enable more students to get quality education.
Private primary schools charge between sh15, 000 to sh100, 000 fees and above.
Children in these schools, unlike their counterparts in public schools who do not pay tuition fees, tend to enjoy better education, foreign languages, and extracurricular activities such as swimming, among other sports.
Mr. Machogu mentioned the Kenya Private Schools Association as a valuable partner in the quest to provide quality education to every child in Kenya.
He said that by fostering open dialogue, working collaboratively, and finding innovative solutions, they can create an educational ecosystem that is efficient, sustainable, and inclusive.
“That is why I urged you to cooperate with the government to help reduce the running cost of private schools and make quality education available to all,” said the minister in a speech read on behalf of the Director of Education for the Coast region, Lucas Kangongo.
The Chairman of the Association of Private Schools in the country (KPSA), Charles Ochome, said the stakeholders will cooperate with the government to strengthen studies.
“We charge school fees based on operating costs.
If the government can reduce operating costs, it will directly reduce school fees,” he said.
Speaking during the Annual General Meeting of the Private Schools Association (KPSA) on Friday, the Minister commended the stakeholders for providing quality education.
“It has greatly contributed to the many successes we have achieved in this sector.
We recognize the need to close that gap and ensure that issues of efficiency, relevance, quality, access, and equity are addressed,” said the minister.
He said the Government has closely cooperated with the party to ensure that the transition policy of 100 percent from primary to secondary education is successful.
