Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a directive to security authorities to tackle the resurgence of the banned Mungiki sect in parts of Central Kenya and Nairobi.
During the burial of former MP Peter Weru’s mother in Mathira, Nyeri County, Gachagua expressed his concern about a group of youths claiming to offer security services for a fee, emphasizing the unacceptable nature of such activities.
“Why are people being protected by these youths? How can someone from a supermarket afford to pay for protection every day? That is unacceptable…
Where are the funds when matatu operators’ money is taken? Take strict action,” he stated.
Gachagua emphasized that the issue extends beyond Central Kenya, instructing national administration officials nationwide to take decisive action against illegal gangs.
He stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law and preventing criminal gangs from regaining influence.
“We will not allow criminal gangs to resurface and destabilize this region.
I have given clear instructions to County Commanders to safeguard people’s businesses and ensure that criminal activities do not disrupt any business,” he asserted.
The Deputy President also criticized leaders linked to the sect, urging them to disassociate from the illegal group.
He pointed out the serious offenses committed by the Mungiki, including killings, female circumcision, and child defilement, emphasizing that such associations cannot be tolerated.
In support of the crackdown, women legislators called on Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki to intensify efforts against criminal gangs, highlighting the disproportionate impact on the female gender.
Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a emphasized the need for comprehensive security, preventing young individuals from getting involved in these groups, stating, “We have to stop this madness.”
Meanwhile, Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi warned of the potential consequences, stating, “We need to wake up before we find our cities and even the country under gangs like Haiti.”
