Fifty percent of students admitted to universities may not complete their education due to issues with fee payments resulting from incorrect classifications in the funding model.
During a recent parliamentary session, it was revealed that out of 124,364 students who reported to universities, only 75,000 approximately 60 percent have paid their household contribution fees, leaving 49,000 students unpaid and another 2,628 who had not applied for funding at the time of admission.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba stated, “We have instructed all public universities to admit students without requiring payment of their household contributions.”
As of September 20, 2024, a total of 124,364 students out of 138,535 who were placed had reported to their respective universities.
This means that 2,628 students had not applied for funding, while 75,000 students had successfully paid their household contributions.
Ogamba is expected to issue a directive allowing affected students to sit for their exams, following complaints that some have been denied this opportunity.
“No student should be denied the chance to take exams as we work to resolve this issue,” he affirmed, emphasizing the commitment to ensuring all learners can participate.
Appearing before the education committee chaired by Tindret MP Julias Melly, Ogamba noted that only 11,132 appeals had been submitted for the 2024/2025 cycle, which are expected to be resolved by December.
He attributed the inaccuracies in student classifications to reliance on cybercafe attendants for applications, leading to misinformation.
“There are various challenges affecting the accuracy of categorizing students, including internet access, computer literacy, and a lack of understanding of the process,” he explained.
MPs expressed frustration that parents are struggling with fee payments due to these misclassifications.
Melly criticized the current management tools, stating they fail to provide accurate data despite multiple discussions with officials.
Meanwhile, Nyamira Woman Representative Jerusha Momanyi questioned why the ineffective funding model is being imposed on students, asking, “What steps are being taken to correct this issue?”
