President William Ruto attended an event at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), while his Deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, was nearby at the Senate Assembly facing his impeachment trial.
Ruto was joined at the event by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, and Central Bank Governor Kamau Thugge, among others.
The gathering was part of the Kenya Bankers Association’s Inua exhibition, an initiative aimed at promoting and supporting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by showcasing products and services from local entrepreneurs.
While Ruto has remained silent on Gachagua’s impeachment proceedings, the trial is set to conclude with a decisive vote on Thursday, where two-thirds of the Senate’s 67 members are needed to finalize his removal from office.
In a recent attempt to halt the proceedings, Gachagua’s bid was blocked by a three-judge panel, led by Chief Justice Martha Koome.
The court ruled that it would respect the independence of governmental institutions and allow the Senate process to continue uninterrupted.
During his address at KICC, President Ruto commended the banking sector for its critical role in upholding the stability of the economy and maintaining the integrity of the financial sector.
He also praised the industry for setting a strong example in tax compliance and highlighted its essential role in supporting MSMEs, which he acknowledged contribute significantly to job creation and economic growth.
“Last year, the banking industry contributed Sh190 billion in taxes, a clear reflection of its performance and potential,” Ruto stated.
He emphasized that the government is committed to championing the contributions of MSMEs, noting their impact on generating up to 90 percent of jobs and nearly a third of Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
