Ruth Chepngetich and John Korir are basking in the glory of their gold medal victories at the 2024 Chicago Marathon, and leaders across Kenya are joining in the celebration.
President William Ruto expressed immense pride in their achievements, particularly highlighting Chepngetich’s historic performance.
“I commend Chepngetich for breaking the World Record and becoming the first woman ever to finish a marathon in under two hours and ten minutes,” he remarked.
The President also acknowledged Bravo Irine Cheptai, who secured third place, adding, “Her bronze medal contributes to Kenya’s growing legacy in athletics.
” He continued, “Congratulations to Mr. Korir for winning the men’s race, and to Amos Kipruto for bringing home the bronze.”
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua echoed these sentiments, declaring that Kenya is “super proud” of Chepngetich’s remarkable feat.
“Hearty congratulations to Ruth Chepngetich for setting a new World Marathon Record today.
Bravo to John Korir for his victory and to all Kenyan participants who excelled in the event.”
Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also recognized the athletes, praising their performances.
“Congratulations to Ruth Chepngetich for her phenomenal run at the Chicago Marathon, leading from start to finish to break the world record,” he said.
He extended his commendations to Cheptai for her third-place finish and to Korir for his effortless win, while also acknowledging Kipruto for securing third in the men’s category.
Murkomen expressed gratitude to the Chicago Marathon for honoring the memory of the late Kelvin Kiptum with a moment of silence and special tribute stickers worn by runners.
Chepngetich’s record-breaking time of two hours, nine minutes, and 57 seconds surpasses the previous record held by Ethiopian Tigst Assefa by nearly two minutes.
“I feel incredible; this is a dream come true,” said Chepngetich, the 2019 world marathon champion.
“I’ve worked hard for this moment, and it’s finally here.”
