President William Ruto has condemned the shareholding comments that triggered the impeachment of his beleaguered Deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, labeling them as “repugnant.”
This marks the first time Ruto has directly addressed Gachagua’s situation, having previously remained silent throughout the impeachment proceedings.
Meanwhile, the High Court has suspended Gachagua’s replacement and set a hearing for Thursday.
Speaking at the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kwale, Ruto criticized those advocating for resource allocation methods that exclude certain individuals and regions.
“Every Kenyan is a full and equal member of our political community, entitled to contribute to nation-building and to receive a fair share of the benefits from our development,” Ruto stated.
He further emphasized, “No proposal that discriminates or unjustly diminishes one group while favoring another is acceptable.
Any attempt to exclude, alienate, or disenfranchise individuals or communities is fundamentally opposed to our nation’s principles.”
The shareholding controversy was central to the motion for Gachagua’s removal, being the first among eleven charges against him.
A significant 54 out of 67 senators supported the accusation, which claimed Gachagua was undermining national unity by comparing Kenya to a company where individuals’ shares depend on their voting patterns.
In his defense to lawmakers, Gachagua reiterated his position, referencing a secret pre-election agreement within the Kenya Kwanza coalition that allocated government roles among its member parties to support his statements.
