Safaricom has responded to recent conversations regarding data privacy and the sharing of customer information with security agencies and third parties.
In their statement, the company highlighted several key points:
Firstly, Safaricom reaffirms its dedication to safeguarding customer privacy and adhering to national data protection laws.
They clarified that customer data will only be disclosed if required by a court order.
Importantly, the company explained that Call Data Records (CDRs) do not enable real-time tracking of customers.
Instead, these records are created after a call concludes, and text messages are recorded once they are sent or received, primarily for billing purposes.
In July 2012, Safaricom collaborated with Neural Technologies to implement a Fraud Management System (FMS) across all its services, including mobile money.
Neural Technologies is a recognized global entity operating in over 30 countries, specializing in fraud detection and prevention, with strict measures in place to protect sensitive data from third-party access.
Recently, Safaricom earned the ISO 27701 Privacy Information Management System (PIMS) certification from the British Standards Institute (BSI).
This certification, granted after an extensive audit, highlights the company’s commitment to maintaining high data privacy standards and its responsibility as a data controller.
Lastly, Safaricom reassures its customers of its commitment to transparency and integrity in its dealings with stakeholders, emphasizing its aim to maintain the trust it has built with its customer base over the years.
