The Senate is set to meet on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, to discuss the impeachment charges against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
This session, scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m., follows a formal notice issued in accordance with Article 145 (3)(a) of the Constitution and Senate Standing Order 78(1).
During the meeting, the Senate will review the allegations against Gachagua and may form a special committee to investigate the matter further.
This committee will provide an opportunity for Gachagua or his representative to respond to the charges.
If at least two-thirds of the Senate votes in favor of the impeachment, Gachagua will be removed from office.
This Senate session occurs just hours after the National Assembly’s historic impeachment vote on Tuesday, where 281 Members of Parliament supported the motion to impeach Gachagua, while 44 voted against it and one abstained.
The impeachment motion was introduced by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse and includes 11 charges against the Deputy President.
Key allegations comprise gross violation of the Constitution, undermining the authority of the President and the Cabinet, compromising devolution, and jeopardizing judicial independence through public attacks on a judge.
Additionally, the charges encompass incitement, economic crimes, spreading divisive and inflammatory remarks, openly defying the President, and persistently bullying state and public officials.
These serious allegations have raised significant concerns about Gachagua’s conduct in office and have led to calls for accountability at the highest levels of government.
As the Senate prepares to deliberate on these charges, the political landscape in the country remains charged, with many closely monitoring the proceedings and their potential implications for the future of the Deputy President and the government as a whole.
