Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago is set to appear in the Nakuru Chief Magistrate Court.
He faces serious charges related to the alleged embezzlement of sh.1.1 billion, which was intended to fund scholarships for students traveling to Finland.
The court proceedings will focus on accusations of conspiracy to commit economic crimes, abuse of office, breach of trust, and fraudulent acquisition of public funds, among other charges.
Mandago, along with his co-defendants Joseph Maritim, Joshua Lelei, Meshack Rono, and Jacob Sisey from Skill Dove Ltd, is accused of misappropriating funds designated for the education of over 125 students.
The case has drawn significant attention, with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) spearheading the investigation.
This probe was triggered by a referral from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), highlighting the serious nature of the allegations.
The scholarship fund in question was managed by the Uasin Gishu Education Trust Fund.
Established to facilitate higher education opportunities abroad, the fund received substantial contributions from parents.
However, it has been reported that a considerable amount of this money was misused.
The EACC’s investigation reveals that instead of supporting the intended beneficiaries, a large portion of the funds was allegedly diverted from its original purpose.
The court case today will likely delve into the specifics of how the funds were allegedly misappropriated and whether the accused parties are guilty of the charges brought against them.
The outcome of this trial could have significant implications for both the individuals involved and the broader issue of financial mismanagement in public projects.
