Police said the dead included the driver of an ill-fated lorry that was transporting rice to the border town of Isebania before developing brake failure and crashing in Migori.
Other witnesses said the death toll may rise and that the bodies were ten.
The driver lost control of the lorry on the Migori – Isebania road and, according to witnesses, started hooting at the Chamkombe area signaling brake failure before knocking several people in the busy town.
Migori County Police Commander Mark Wanjala confirmed the incident saying investigations have already begun to establish the cause of the accident.
He said they had rescued at least ten people from the scene and taken them to hospitals.
Two people were knocked down into River Migori, with efforts to save them still proving futile as the river is currently inaccessible.
Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga condoled the incident.
“I offer my deepest sympathies to all those who have lost their loved ones, friends, and colleagues in the tragic accident that occurred this morning at the boda boda stage in Migori town.”
“May God grant you all fortitude to get through this difficult moment. Poleni kwa msiba,” he said.
