Kenya Railways is set to increase fares by 50 percent in the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train with effect from January 1.
Nairobi to Mombasa will cost Sh4,500 in first class and Sh1,500 in economy.
Kenya Railways has attributed the increase to the high cost of fuel.
In a statement, the company stated that this is due to the hike in fuel prices that has increased operational costs.
Kenya Railways said the upward review of prices will affect the Madaraka Express services, Nairobi Commuter Rail Service as well as the Kisumu and Nanyuki Safari trains.
A notice issued by Kenya Railways showed passengers using Economy Class on the Nairobi-Mombasa route will pay Sh500 more as the cost rises to Sh1,500 from the previous Sh1,000.
“This increase is informed by changes in the energy and petroleum sector where prices of fuel have significantly increased thus affecting the cost of our operations,” said Kenya Railways, in a statement.
The new fares come into effect on January 1, 2024.
According to Kenya Railways, customers making advance purchases for the Madaraka Express Passenger Service will notice the adjusted fares as of November 1, 2023, to take into account the advance ticket purchasing window of 60 days.
The adjusted process for the Kisumu and Nanyuki routes is yet to be released.
Currently, a liter of Super Petrol is retailing at Sh217.36, diesel at Sh205.47, and kerosene at Sh205.06 in Nairobi.
