A couple that was visiting the country from Minnesota, USA, was brutally murdered in their big mansion house at Nyamakoroto Village, Gesima Ward, Nyamira country on March 21, 2022.
Police said the body of Edward Morema Nyagechi, 63, a resident in the United States, was found lying dead near his garage with deep cuts on his head while his hands and legs were tied with binding wire.
His wife Grace Morema, 60, was later found in the bedroom with deep cuts around her neck and tied up in a similar manner to her husband, police said.
Police termed the March 21 incident murder.
A crowd looked shaken as they saw the bodies which lay on the ground with deep panga wounds and hands tied behind their backs.
The mouths of the two were stuffed with clothes to prevent them from fighting back or asking for help as well.
Masaba North Deputy Police Commander Robert Ndambiri said they suspect they were tortured before being murdered.
He said they had not established the motive of the Tuesday murder.
“It seems the killers first captured them, tied their hands, and gagged their mouths so that they could not scream for help. We think they died as a result of excessive bleeding,” he said on the phone.
Ndambiri said police are holding two employees, a maid, and a farm worker for grilling over the murder.
He said the two will provide information on what they know happened.
A backup team was Wednesday sent to the area to investigate the murder.
The bodies were moved to Kisii Referral Hospital awaiting a postmortem.
Such incidents have been on the rise in the region and are linked to land tussles.
Some of them remain unresolved.
