The family of Jan Muller is reeling after he and his wife, Kitty, were attacked during a house robbery on Monday, leading to his death.
A family spokesperson, Ian Cameron, of the civil organization, Action Society, told News24 the couple was enjoying an evening outdoors on their smallholding in Mnandi, outside Centurion, when the attackers pounced.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello said: “The police received a complaint of a house robbery in progress and, upon arrival, they found a white man lying face down with multiple stab wounds. The man was declared dead on the scene and the woman who had also sustained a stab wound on the body was taken to hospital.”
According to News24, Jan was murdered meters away from where the body of his daughter, Arina, was found almost 11 years ago, said Cameron.
He said Muller’s son was devastated and praying for his mother’s recovery.
“He is in shock. To lose a father and sister to murder in 10 years is horrific. I think he is focusing on making sure his mother recovers. It’s sad because his other sister died of health problems.
“His parents had recently retired and were looking forward to enjoying their retirement,” he said.
Cameron said crime was a concern in the area.
“This area is a problem. A lady was stabbed recently, and someone was shot. The area is not doing well. That area has been a rural safety problem for the last 15 years. I am devastated because I can see what [crime] does to a family and community,” he said.
Sello said police in Olievenhoutbosch were investigating a case of murder, attempted murder, and house robbery.
There have been no arrests.
