Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has scheduled a special sitting to address the charges against Meru County Governor Kawira Mwangaza, following her recent impeachment.
In an announcement, Kingi stated that the Senate will meet on Wednesday, August 14, at 2:30 p.m. to hear the allegations against Governor Mwangaza.
The session will be dedicated exclusively to discussing these charges.
“The only item on the agenda for this special sitting will be the hearing of charges against Ms. Kawira Mwangaza, Governor of Meru County,” Kingi’s notice said.
“Following this sitting, the Senate will adjourn until Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at 2:30 p.m., as per the Senate calendar.”
Governor Mwangaza’s fate now hinges on the Senate, which has previously intervened to save her from impeachment attempts.
The special sitting will follow the Meru County Assembly’s recent approval of a motion to remove her from office.
On August 8, 2024, Meru County Assembly members impeached Mwangaza for the third time, with 49 MCAs supporting the motion.
Three MCAs abstained from voting, and 17 voted against her removal. This was the fifth attempt to oust Mwangaza, resulting in three successful impeachments.
The motion was spearheaded by Zipporah Kinya, the deputy majority leader, who accused Mwangaza of gross constitutional violations, misconduct, and abuse of office.
Among the allegations are her failure to appoint key board chairs, improper revocation of a county secretary’s appointment, and mishandling of emergency call allowances for doctors, resulting in excessive payments of sh74.3 million.
Additionally, she is accused of using a manual payroll system to pay Ksh102.9 million in personnel emoluments.
Kinya also criticized Mwangaza for allegedly inflating the county’s workforce.
