Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has announced plans to significantly boost Kenya’s tourism industry, aiming to increase tourist arrivals from the current 2 million to 5 million by 2027.
Speaking at a meeting with officials from the Kenya Tourism Federation and Kenya Tourist Guides, Miano emphasized that strategic partnerships with various stakeholders will be crucial in achieving this goal.
Her ministry envisions raising annual tourism revenue from Sh352 billion to approximately Sh824 billion.
“My goal is to collaborate closely with the private sector to establish a unified strategy that will position tourism as the leading contributor to foreign exchange earnings, job creation, and GDP growth,” Miano stated.
Miano also acknowledged the valuable contributions of the private sector in organizing and participating in local and international events, marketing campaigns, policy advocacy, and developing innovative tourism products.
“We appreciate the ongoing partnership and support from the private sector,” she added.
Looking ahead, Miano outlined plans to enhance domestic tourism by developing the National Tourism Strategy and implementing initiatives to make travel and accommodation more affordable.
“We are committed to creating an annual calendar of tourism events and will be launching the ‘Tembea Kenya’ campaign to promote year-round domestic tourism,” she said.
The upcoming UN World Tourism Day on September 27, 2024, will serve as a significant platform for promoting both domestic and international tourism.
Miano revealed that the government is working with various counties to host the event and will encourage celebrations nationwide.
Addressing the concerns raised by stakeholders, Miano assured them that she has reviewed their issues and suggestions, many of which are still under consideration.
She reaffirmed her commitment to addressing these matters and advancing the tourism sector’s growth.
