A section of students at Multimedia University in Nairobi blocked Magadi Road as they protested the death of their colleague.
Police and witnesses said the students blocked Magadi Road towards Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County on Monday in protests over the death of their colleague, Lameck Wambui Mwangi.
Mwangi, a second-year student in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology, was found dead on March 9 in what authorities suspect was a hit-and-run accident.
The students engaged police in running battles after barricading the road and paralyzig transport for the better part of the morning.
Police used tear gas canisters to disperse the students in the running battles.
The students blamed the accident on the newly road which lacks markings and speed bumps.
Motorists were locked out as the standoff between students and police officers escalated, with tear gas being used to disperse the crowd.
Police promised to engage relevant roads agencies to address speeding on the road.
Motorists were advised to seek alternative routes as police battled with the rioting students.
Fatal accidents are common on the route.
