Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit have arrested a 27-year-old woman at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for attempting to smuggle two kilograms of bhang.
The suspect, identified as Quinter Achieng Matengo, was intercepted while preparing to board a flight to Doha, Qatar.
The arrest followed a routine luggage screening by Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) staff, who raised suspicion about the contents of her bags.
The anti-narcotics team, working closely with KAA, carried out the interception, which led to the discovery of the illicit drugs.
Upon further investigation, the drugs were found cleverly concealed inside packets of maize flour.
This method of concealment is commonly used by traffickers to evade detection.
Matengo was questioned and handed over to the Anti-Narcotics Unit for further processing.
The recovered drugs were weighed and securely stored as evidence, while the suspect’s belongings were thoroughly examined.
Authorities are continuing to investigate whether she was part of a larger trafficking network.
The suspect is set to face charges of drug trafficking, and the authorities have promised to pursue the matter rigorously to deter similar illegal activities at the airport.
The arrest comes amid growing concerns over the use of Kenya’s airports as transit points for drug trafficking.
Law enforcement officials have vowed to ramp up efforts to tackle the illicit trade, particularly at JKIA, which has seen several high-profile drug smuggling attempts in recent years.
