Six teachers on interdiction and who were detained for subjecting children to an indecent act were released on a bond of Sh500,000 each.
The teachers from IItumbe DOK Primary School in Kisii County had been in custody for almost a week.
They were given the bond with a surety of a similar amount without a cash bail.
The six were arrested after a video showed pupils in school uniforms being compelled by their teachers to commit an indecent act while lying on top of each other.
This happened as the teachers laughed out loud in the background, which sparked a public uproar.
On Monday, February 6 evening, they were presented at Ogembo Law Courts before Principal Magistrate Calestous Sindani Nambafu where they pleaded not guilty to subjecting the children to cruel, inhuman, degrading treatment and punishment, and an indecent act.
They are accused of subjecting children to cruel, inhuman, degrading punishment contrary to section 25 (3) of the Children Act 202 as read section 7 (a) and (b) of the Prevention of Torture Act Number 12 of 2017.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers officials welcomed the determination.
They will appear in court on March 20, 2023, for mention of the matter.
The Teachers Service Commission has since replaced the six teachers at the school.
