A tragic incident unfolded in Jonesboro, Georgia, where a 17-year-old named Stephon Ford lost his life when he was shot by the police.
This unfortunate event occurred in the early hours of a Saturday morning, just before 2 a.m., roughly 17 miles south of Atlanta.
The incident began when the Jonesboro Police Department responded to a report of suspicious activity involving three young males at a local hotel.
Upon encountering the officers, all three individuals tried to flee. Fortunately, the police managed to apprehend two of them and took them into custody.
However, the third suspect managed to evade capture, prompting the Jonesboro police to seek assistance from the Clayton County Police Department.
In response, the county police dispatched a K-9 unit to aid in the search, which eventually led to the discovery of the suspect hiding in a nearby wooded area.
The officers issued verbal commands, urging the suspect to surrender.
Regrettably, the teenager responded by brandishing a handgun and opening fire, tragically injuring the police dog.
Despite their best efforts, the officers were unable to save the injured canine, who was transported to a local animal hospital but ultimately succumbed to its injuries.
Several hours later, the suspect was located again within the established search perimeter.
Once more, the officers attempted to peacefully resolve the situation by instructing the suspect to drop his weapon.
Unfortunately, the suspect allegedly pointed his firearm at the officers, leaving them with no choice but to use lethal force in self-defense.
The suspect was struck by gunfire and subsequently lost his life.
Thankfully, no officers or civilians sustained injuries during this tense encounter.
The investigation into this incident has been handed over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, the police department mourned the loss of their loyal police dog, Waro.
