The 1,648 persons affected by the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone project have declined a government offer of a disturbance allowance of Sh 65,000 per acre.
This emerged during a baraza held at the project site ahead of President William Ruto’s groundbreaking ceremony in Likoni constituency, Mombasa county.
Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria had a hectic time trying to convince the local residents to accept the government offer.
A consultant for the project was booed and heckled when he tried to explain the government’s stand on the controversial Sh 39 billion Special Economic Zone project.
He made it clear amid tension during the baraza which was snubbed by local elected leaders that the government will allocate alternative parcels of land to those whose land is taken up by the project.
He insisted those whose land is taken up by the project will get alternative land within the county.
“For every acre of the land Kenya ports Authority [KPA] will set aside a disturbance allowance of Sh 65,000 to individual owners,” he pointed out.
The president is expected at the site on Friday.
