Brian Mwenda, a young Kenyan who pretended to be a High Court lawyer, has been making headlines worldwide.
Many people have been talking about him in the past week.
Kenyans have been sharing their thoughts on social media after it was revealed that Mwenda was pretending to be a lawyer in Kenya.
Some videos of Mwenda in court, where he was making legal arguments and representing clients, have appeared online.
One of the most talked-about parts of this story was the claim that Mwenda won all 26 cases he was involved in.
Many people believed this and thought of him as a hero.
However, the Law Society of Kenya, led by its president Eric Theuri, has rejected the idea that Mwenda won those 26 cases.
They say he is a fake lawyer and should be arrested for pretending to be someone he’s not.
Unfortunately, some international media outlets picked up this story without checking the facts.
The Daily Mail in the United Kingdom, for instance, shared Mwenda’s photo on social media with the headline, “‘Fake’ lawyer, ‘who won all 26 of his cases without legal training,’ arrested.”
With this headline, the world started paying attention and sharing their thoughts
People’s comments ranged from funny to serious.
“Give him RPL ed (recognition of prior learning) and just give him his license,” one person said.
Another said: “Based on his previous performance, I would suggest he defends himself.”
Yet more comments trickled in:
“He needed to be a real lawyer! With that kind of skill and natural gift! Shame on the 26 lawyers who lost against his case!”
“Does it really matter if he’s qualified.
Some people are excellent at things they didn’t qualify for and have a natural talent.
I never went to uni to do a teaching degree yet I own my own drama school and I am a successful teacher and have for years!”
“The lawyers who lost against him should be arrested.”
“That tells me, law isn’t actually a course but something to do with critical thinking and strong reasoning ability.
That may be a natural talent for naturally talented or it’s taught to those who want to develop and adopt this talent too!”
“He was born with relevant knowledge and skills”
Locally, opinions are divided. Some lawyers are angry with Mwenda for pretending to be a lawyer, but others, including former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and COTU secretary-general Francis Atwoli, want to protect him.
Mwenda’s case has prompted the police, led by Eric Theuri, to crack down on fake lawyers.
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Renson Mulele Ingonga, has also called on the police to investigate the matter and arrest Mwenda.
