The American Embassy in Tanzania has joined the chorus of condemnation following the murder of Chadema opposition politician Ali Mohammed Kibao.
In a statement issued via the X network (formerly Twitter), the Embassy has called for an independent and transparent investigation into Kibao’s abduction and death.
The Embassy’s statement underscores that such acts of violence, including murder and kidnapping, are incompatible with democratic values.
“The recent incidents of murder, disappearance, and the suppression of citizens through arrests and violence in the aftermath of last month’s elections have no place in a democracy,” the statement reads
. It emphasizes that these brutal actions undermine the rights enshrined in the Tanzanian constitution.
The Embassy extended its condolences to Mr. Kibao’s family and expressed sympathy for the loss of his life and leadership.
Recent days have seen a surge in reported kidnappings in Tanzania.
Chadema Secretary John Mnyika reported that Ali Kibao was abducted by armed men while en route to the Tanga region.
“Last night, around midnight, Mzee Ali Mohammed Kibao was forcibly taken by armed individuals near Tegeta in Kibo areas.
His bus was intercepted by two vehicles, and he was taken from his seat by force,” Mnyika detailed.
Tanzanian police have confirmed the death of Kibao.
He was buried on Monday at his home in the Tanga region.
The call for a thorough investigation into his murder reflects growing concerns about the safety and integrity of political figures in Tanzania.
