Detectives have apprehended three suspects linked to a series of violent robberies in Imenti North and Buuri West subcounties.
The arrests occurred during a coordinated operation involving personnel from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters’ Criminal Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB), the Operation Support Unit (OSU), and the Operation Action Team (OAT).
DCI Director Mohamed Amin announced on Wednesday that the operation was supported by officers from Imenti Central and Buuri West subcounties.
He explained that detectives managed to locate the suspects after tracking them from their hideouts.
Through careful interrogation, the suspects directed the officers to Kianjuri village, where they had buried an M16 rifle in a hidden location.
Officers recovered an M16 model (SAR) rifle, two magazines, 67 rounds of 5.5mm ammunition, a black jacket, two gunny bags, and a brown marvin.
Ballistic reports confirmed that the firearm was linked to cartridges submitted earlier in the investigation.
Additionally, it was discovered that a police officer from Marsabit County was collaborating with the suspects and was arrested swiftly.
Amin stated that the suspects had instilled fear among residents of Imenti North and Buuri West for some time.
Their criminal activities included the theft of two prized cows a Friesian and an Ayrshire from a homestead in Magati village on September 5, during which they fired shots into the air to disperse villagers.
On September 15, the suspects reportedly raided a home in Rugusu, stealing a dairy cow and shooting the owner, a woman who raised the alarm.
She was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kiirua Mission Hospital.
In their latest incident, the suspects attempted to set a four-bedroom house on fire but failed. In frustration, they shot indiscriminately at the door, injuring the man of the house three times in the abdomen and wounding his wife.
Both victims are currently hospitalized in serious condition at Kiirua Mission Hospital.
