Detectives from the Kilimani Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended three suspects connected to a burglary in Westlands, Nairobi, where electronic devices and USD 24,500 were stolen a month ago.
The arrested individuals Lenah Khamatioli (28), Ian Kavaya (28), and Peninah Mutola (32) were tracked down to a hideout in Kawangware, where investigators also uncovered newly acquired items believed to be stolen.
The incident occurred on September 24 when the homeowner, a South Sudanese national, returned to her residence on Rahpta Road to discover her housemaid missing along with the substantial cash, an iPhone 15, a Samsung Z Flip, and various pieces of jewelry.
The victim promptly reported the theft to the DCI Kilimani office, prompting an investigation.
After several weeks of forensic analysis, detectives made the arrests, discovering a range of brand-new items in the suspects’ possession.
These included a Boxer motorcycle (Reg No. KMGN 840N), a 55-inch Vitron TV, a Hanmac microwave, an HP laptop, a NNix cooker oven, a 6kg Pro gas cylinder, a five-seater sofa, a mattress, two watches, and three new Samsung A50 phones.
Additionally, the authorities seized a purchase agreement for a parcel of land in Kapkangani, Nandi County, valued at sh 423,000 for further investigation.
The suspects are currently in custody while detectives continue to search for possible accomplices and any remaining stolen items.
In June 2022, former President Uhuru Kenyatta inaugurated a National Forensic Laboratory for the DCI, aimed at enhancing the agency’s ability to address complex crimes and strengthen the criminal justice system with reliable evidence.
This facility is also intended to safeguard police officers from unfounded allegations.
Kenyatta pointed out various crimes, including SIM swapping and scams, that the forensic lab would target through advanced investigative techniques.
Former Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu was arrested on October 30, 2024, following a forensic analysis by the DCI.
Investigations into a social media video revealed that his remarks were offensive, highlighting the forensic lab’s critical role in ensuring accountability for unlawful activities.
