The Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Tourism have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at improving the security of tourists in Kenya. T
he agreement was signed by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki and Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano.
CS Kindiki highlighted that the partnership will strengthen collaboration with the National Police Service (NPS) to ensure a safe and positive experience for both local and international tourists.
He emphasized that enhancing security will contribute to expanding the tourism sector, creating more job opportunities, and boosting the economy.
“To achieve this goal, the Ministry of Interior has signed an MoU with the Ministry of Tourism to improve cooperation with the National Police Service,” Kindiki said.
The agreement includes providing necessary resources and logistical support to the Tourism Police Unit (TPU) through the Tourism Fund, which will help safeguard the safety of visitors.
Kindiki further stated that the MoU aims to increase the annual number of foreign tourist arrivals from the current 2 million to 5 million by 2027, and to 10 million by 2032.
The signing was witnessed by key officials, including Principal Secretaries Raymond Omollo (Interior Security and National Administration) and John Ololtuaa (Tourism), as well as Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Kenya Police Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat.
Tourism CS Rebecca Miano added that Kenya is working on strategies to boost international tourist arrivals.
Speaking at an event in Nairobi, she revealed that the country generated sh 142.5 billion in tourism revenue in the first half of this year, attributed to a rise in visitor numbers.
According to the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), Kenya saw a 21.3% increase in international visitors, with 1.03 million arrivals compared to 847,810 during the same period last year.
Domestic tourism also grew, with 2.25 million bed nights recorded, a 10% rise from the previous year.
Miano reiterated her commitment to strengthening partnerships with the private sector to make tourism a leading contributor to foreign exchange and job creation.
