Tragedy As 2 Miners Die After Running Out Of Oxygen In Siaya Shaft

Two miners have died after allegedly suffocating while working inside a mining shaft in Abom Sub-location, Bondo Sub-County, Siaya County.

This is the latest such incident to happen to happen at the mining site in the area.

The deceased were identified as Elijah Aketch Akuro, 45, and Angango Aloo, 42, both from East Asembo in Rarieda Sub-County.

The incident was reported on Thursday evening by a witness who said the two men were her workers at the mining site in Nyabenge Village.

Police officers visited the site and established that the two men had been pumping water from the shaft using a fuel-powered generatorplaced inside the underground shaft.

They are believed to have run short of oxygen while inside the shaft and subsequently suffocated.

The bodies had no visible physical injuries and were removed to Bondo Sub-County Hospital Mortuary pending autopsy.

DCI officers processed the scene, while the generator used at the site was recovered and retained as an exhibit as investigations continue.

Such incidents have been on the rise amid calls for safety measures to be put in place to address the trend.

And police are investigating an incident where a 59-year-old man was found dead inside his locked house in Rundicho Village, Embu West Sub-County, on Thursday morning.

The deceased, identified as John Muturi Njagi, was discovered at about 8am by his worker who had unsuccessfully tried to wake him from outside the locked house.

Police said the worker sought the assistance of villagers, who helped break into the house through a window.

They found Njagi’s lifeless body lying on his bed.

A team visited the scene and established that the deceased was lying half-naked and had no visible physical injuries.

The body was removed and escorted to Gakwegori Funeral Home, as relatives made arrangements for burial.

The family suspects that Njagi may have died from health complications, although the exact cause of death remains to be established.
