In Kisumu East Sub-county, a heartbreaking incident unfolded on Wednesday evening as a middle-aged man was swept away while attempting to cross the swollen River Mayenya during heavy rains.
The shocking event left the local community in disbelief, especially since the man, identified as Rooney Obura, lost his life while attempting to navigate the dangerous waters.
Despite the efforts of nearby individuals to rescue him, their attempts proved futile.
Promptly responding to the scene, police officers from Nyamasaria recovered the lifeless body of Rooney Obura.
The deceased was later transported to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) mortuary.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua issued a warning earlier in the week, urging Kenyans to exercise caution around water bodies to prevent such tragedies.
Gachagua expressed concern over the impatience and risky behavior exhibited by some individuals who disregard visible warnings and bravely confront hazardous conditions to reach their destinations.
“Kenyans are cruising rivers when they can see the waters are menacing and they are rough.
And they still insist that they are in a hurry to go somewhere, and they never reach there,” cautioned Gachagua.
He highlighted that 37 reported fatalities were a consequence of individuals defying nature and venturing into perilous floodwaters.
