Five people have been reported dead following the collapse of a gold mine in Rongo, Migori County.
The incident occurred at the Kanga mine on Tuesday evening.
Deputy County Commissioner for Rongo sub-county, George Otenga, stated that “two miners died while they were receiving treatment while three died inside the collapsed mine bringing.”
Otenga explained that 18 miners were inside the mine when it collapsed, and efforts are ongoing to account for everyone involved.
According to Otenga, some miners managed to escape through alternate routes, and authorities are now working to physically verify the survival of the remaining 13 miners.
Officers have been dispatched to locate all survivors from the collapse.
Otenga praised the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders involved in the rescue operation, which extended late into the night.
He noted that these collective efforts were crucial in locating the miners trapped within the 750-foot-deep shaft.
The commissioner urged miners to exercise caution while prospecting for gold to prevent future incidents.
A spot check by Citizen Digital revealed that safety measures remain a significant concern in Migori County’s gold mining sector, with many miners working without protective gear.
