In a recent report by the Controller of Budget, it’s revealed that in Nyeri County, money allocated for transportation, public works, and infrastructure got used up the most during the first part of the 2023/2024 financial year.
Following closely behind were funds for public service administration and youth affairs.
The report highlights that the County Assembly and health department spent a significant chunk of their budget on day-to-day expenses.
Interestingly, the County Attorney’s office spent the least on these routine costs.
Dr. Margaret Nyakang’o from the CoB remarked, “The Transport, Public Works, and Infrastructure Department spent the most on development projects, with the Public Service, Administration, and Youth Affairs Department coming next.”
During the initial three months of the fiscal year, Nyeri County received a good amount of money both from national revenue and other sources.
However, the report points out that the county didn’t use some funds that were meant for specific improvements.
On the spending side, the county used a large portion of its budget to pay employees, but there was a decrease compared to the previous year.
The report also mentions that the health sector had a significant share of this wage bill.
For activities like meetings, the County Assembly spent a portion of its budget, while both the assembly and the executive spent on domestic travel, with the assembly taking the lead.
Moreover, the assembly spent more on foreign travel compared to the executive.
Dr. Nyakang’o advised the county to settle pending bills and improve its own-source revenue.
She emphasized the importance of managing finances efficiently and suggested using modern payroll systems.
Additionally, she urged the county to prioritize planned projects to fulfill public expectations.
Looking ahead, Nyeri County plans to receive a considerable amount from various revenue sources.
The governor highlighted achievements in various sectors during his address, including clearing pending bills and adhering to development budget requirements.
Governor Mutahi Kahiga affirmed, “We’ve been careful in managing our finances, ensuring we use the money allocated to us responsibly.
We’ve also made progress in key areas like agriculture, education, health, and infrastructure.”
