Transport Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, has instructed the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to take action against private vehicle owners who are unlawfully operating as Public Service Vehicles (PSVs).
Addressing a meeting in Nairobi on Thursday organized by the Matatu Owners Association (MOA), Murkomen expressed his worries about private vehicles violating road regulations and tax responsibilities by functioning as PSVs.
“There are some vehicles illegally operating as PSVs across the country.
hey don’t pay any licensing fees because it is illegal, and they are operating at a higher speed because they are not regulated in terms of speed,” stated the Transport CS.
He continued, “They are not inspected; hence, they don’t pay inspection fees.”
While advising against the unauthorized use of private cars as PSVs, Murkomen also urged Kenyans to verify the proper registration and compliance with the law of public vehicles before choosing to use them for transportation.
