Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s biggest chipmaker, is boosting its presence in Japan by constructing a new factory to meet growing customer demands.
The company announced on Tuesday that it will establish a second semiconductor fabrication plant, or fab, in Japan through its subsidiary, Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM). Construction is set to begin by the end of 2024, with the facility expected to be operational by the end of 2027.

This move marks a significant investment in Japan, exceeding $20 billion, supported by both TSMC and the Japanese government, along with investments from companies like Toyota Motor and Sony.
With the addition of this new plant and the already planned first one, TSMC aims to create around 3,400 skilled jobs in Japan.
This expansion comes amidst delays in TSMC’s project in Arizona, USA, where a second semiconductor plant was initially planned.
Originally, TSMC intended to start operations in Arizona by 2026, but now it’s expected to be operational by 2027 or 2028.
This delay contrasts with the earlier excitement surrounding TSMC’s significant investment in the US, which was praised by President Joe Biden as a resurgence of American manufacturing.
TSMC, headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan, dominates the market for super-advanced semiconductors, supplying major tech companies like Apple and Nvidia.
Its chips are crucial components in a wide range of devices, from smartphones to household appliances.
While TSMC has traditionally focused on manufacturing in Taiwan, recent years have seen a strategic shift towards global expansion.
This includes establishing its first European factory in Dresden, Germany, demonstrating the company’s commitment to meeting global demand and diversifying its production capabilities.
