Tragedy struck in the Murinduku area of Mwea East, Kirinyaga County, on Wednesday, January 8, when a fire consumed a home, claiming the lives of two young children.
The victims were four-year-old twins, a boy and a girl, who had been left in the care of their grandmother while their mother was out looking for a school for them.
Neighbors rushed to the scene when the fire broke out, but despite their swift efforts to extinguish the flames, the children’s lives were tragically lost.
The blaze completely destroyed the house, and the twins were burned beyond recognition.
Assistant Chief Patrick Njeru confirmed the devastating incident, explaining that the fire had reduced the home to ashes.
“The house was completely destroyed, and unfortunately, the children were burned so severely that they were unrecognizable,” he said.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire, though an investigation is ongoing.
In a separate, disturbing fire-related incident in Maragua, Murang’a County, a 47-year-old woman is fighting for her life after being set on fire by her boyfriend.
The man reportedly poured kerosene on her and ignited the flames during an argument about food.
Family members who were present at the time of the attack rushed to help, describing the horrific scene.
“The boyfriend came and poured kerosene on her, then set her on fire. We screamed for help, and people came to rescue her,” a relative recalled.
The woman was transported to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she is currently being treated for severe burn injuries.
Relatives revealed that the couple had a history of domestic violence, and authorities are now investigating the incident.
